Esport Canada Introduces New Game Advisors Commission

Winnipeg, Manitoba - Esport Canada, Canada’s leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering a thriving esports ecosystem in Canada, is proud to announce the launch of its Game Advisors Commission. This innovative initiative marks a significant milestone for the organization as the addition of the Game Advisors will allow for further support in helping support the individual esports ecosystems that exist across the country. From Rocket League to Overwatch, the Game Advisors will support Esport Canada’s aim to further the growth of esports across Canada.

Esports has seen tremendous growth in the past couple of years, attracting a diverse and passionate community of players and fans across Canada. With this surge in popularity comes the need for community support across popular game titles to ensure individual titles are supported fairly and equally. Recognizing this need, Esport Canada has developed the Game Advisors Commission to provide essential support and guidance to the ever-expanding esports landscape. Each Game Advisor is selected to represent their esports ecosystem and provide critical insights into their communities so that Esport Canada can best serve the esports fans and players of each given title.

Esport Canada’s founding Game Advisor Commission is proud to welcome: Excess from Dota 2, Vince Hui from the Fighting Game Community, Silver from VALORANT, LiN_fps from Counter-Strike 2, Seb. Martin-Schultz from Rocket League, and Chibi from Overwatch and Call of Duty. Each selected Game Advisor brings with them a wealth of experience interacting with, supporting, and growing their respective communities.

“The landscape of esports is diverse and unique in that each genre and each title has its own distinct community”, says Melissa Burns, Chair & CEO of Esport Canada. “While many folks refer to ‘esports’ as though they are all one-in-the-same, each game is its own discipline with its own nuances and community for fans and players alike. What we hope to do by introducing the Game Advisors Commission is tap into the wealth of knowledge and experience these leaders have within their respective titles to help guide an authentic approach to each of these games and their communities of players and fans.”

"Fighting games are something great." a line said by Tokido, one of many legendary FGC competitors I look up to,” said Vince Hui, Game Advisor for the FGC. “It's why I saw an opportunity to represent the fighting game community as one of Esports Canada's game advisors as a key advantage in raising awareness and sharing my love of the game. I hope to show Canada who their fighting gamers are and the great things we can, and will, accomplish together as a community!”

Esport Canada’s Game Advisors Commission will be working closely with the executive team and the board members to help advise on the current and future initiatives to ensure that their respected communities feel supported and welcomed. The Game Advisors Commission will be focusing their initial efforts on supporting the National Team combines and team selection for the 2024 Global Esports Games and World Esports Championships with plans to expand into local and national initiatives over the course of the year.

“I've always had a love for gaming, and I first became interested in professional esports when I saw Team Canada compete in the 2017 Overwatch World Cup. Since then it's been a goal of mine to become professionally involved in esports and strengthen the Canadian scene,” explained Lenna Ly-Matz, Game Advisor for Call of Duty and Overwatch 2. “I've built a career working with top esports teams including the Vancouver Titans, Toronto Defiant, Seattle Surge, Toronto Ultra, and serving as the first female General Manager for Canada's Overwatch World Cup team in 2023. With Esports Canada, I hope to leverage my expertise and years of experience in service of increasing the interest for esports in my home country, and championing the inclusion of underrepresented gender identities in esports.”

"When I started watching Rocket League back in its earlier days we had a lot of of Canadian heroes that came through our region, SquishyMuffinz, Jknaps, Lachinio among others. Being able to support the Canadian scene in Rocket League has always been a goal and I think Esports Canada will become a great avenue for this in the coming years,” said Seb. Martin-Schultz, Game Advisor for Rocket League. “Canada has always had incredible talent in Rocket League with a long pedigree at all levels of play, I want to help Esports Canada create the foundation for the next generation of Canadian Rocket League players."

Esport Canada is excited to work alongside our Game Advisors to create opportunities in Canadian esports communities across the country and look forward to adding more advisors in the near future.
